UV DTF Film Applications and Sizes: Substrates, Rolls and Sheets

UV DTF crystal label film applications and sizes

Two questions decide whether UV DTF crystal label film is the right material for your shop: can it go on the products you actually sell, and can you buy it in a size your workflow can consume.

This article covers the surfaces we see crystal labels applied to most often, where the process genuinely stops working, and the standard and custom sizes available.

Which Products Do UV DTF Film Crystal Labels Go On?

Our crystal label film is routinely used on flat and simple curved surfaces. The applications we see most often:

SubstrateTypical product
AcrylicDisplay stands, keychains, signage panels
Phone casesHard-shell and rigid cases
Gift boxesRigid and folding gift packaging
CartonsPrinted cartons, mailer boxes
GlassBottles, jars, flat glassware
Insulated cupsTumblers and travel cups
MugsCeramic mugs and promotional drinkware
NotebooksCovers, planners, journals

That list is what we see in practice — it is not an exclusive list, and it is not a guarantee for your specific substrate.

Why Substrate Choice Matters More Than the Graphic for UV DTF Film

The reason crystal labels work on this range at all is the transfer method. You print onto the A film, laminate it with the B film, strip the waste, and then apply the finished graphic by hand to the product. Only the lamination step runs hot, at 90–95 °C. The transfer itself is a cold operation.

That single fact is what opens the substrate list up. Nothing in the process puts heat into the product, so you are not limited to materials that survive a heat press — glass, filled packaging, acrylic and finished drinkware are all viable because they never see a hot platen.

But it also sets the real boundary. Because the graphic is applied by pressing and working it onto the surface, the practical limit is not heat resistance — it is surface geometry:

  • Flat panels — the easiest case. Acrylic, glass, cartons and notebook covers apply cleanly and consistently.
  • Simple curves — cups, tumblers and bottles. The film is flexible enough to follow a single-direction curve, but you will want to work from the centre outward and expect a learning curve on high-curvature diameters.
  • Heavily textured or powder-coated surfaces — the adhesive needs a continuous surface to bond to. Deep texture, heavy grain or a loose powder coating will reduce contact area and holding strength.
  • Complex compound curves and deep recesses — where the film has to stretch in two directions at once or fold into a cavity. This is where you should trial before quoting a customer.

If your product sits in the last two categories, order a sample roll and test on the real substrate before committing. That is a two-hour test that saves a rejected order.

What Sizes Does UV DTF Film Come In?

Standard stock sizes:

SizeFormatNotes
30 cmRollNarrow format for small graphics and low-volume runs
60 cmRollWider format for larger graphics and production runs
A4SheetSampling, small batches, test prints
A3SheetLarger sheet work and mid-size graphics

The film is supplied as an A film + B film system, and both parts are needed to run the process — the A film carries the adhesive layer the UV ink prints onto, and the B film is the transfer film that holds the finished graphic through waste removal and application.

Thickness, for reference, differs by base colour: the transparent base A film runs around 75 µm, the white (photo-paper base) A film around 190 µm, and the B film around 80–90 µm. Those are typical values rather than guaranteed figures — if you need to hold a tolerance, ask for the specification sheet on the exact SKU.

Can You Order Custom UV DTF Film Sizes?

Yes. Custom widths and lengths are available, and custom sizing is calculated as its own price rather than as a surcharge on a stock item.

Custom sizes are quoted rather than listed, and the reason is straightforward: a custom width changes how the material is slit and how it is packed, so the price depends on the specification and the quantity. Send us the width, length and the quantity you need and we will quote against it.

The difference in lead time is worth planning around:

Order typeLead timeMinimum
Stock specificationsShips within 48 hoursFrom 1 roll
Custom specifications3–5 daysQuoted per specification

For a first order, the practical route is to run stock sizes, confirm the parameters on your own printer, and move to custom widths once your production volume justifies it. If you are setting up a multi-up layout, you can also mix widths in one order — 30 cm and 60 cm alongside A4 and A3 sheets — rather than committing a full order to a single format.

UV DTF Film: Roll or Sheet, How to Choose

The format decision usually comes down to job profile rather than performance — the film behaves the same either way.

Your situationRecommended format
Repeated production of the same graphicsRoll (30 cm or 60 cm)
Building a new product line, unknown demandSheets (A4 / A3)
Sampling for a customer before quotingA4 sheet
Graphics larger than A3Roll
Multiple small products per printRoll, laid out multi-up
Occasional use alongside other workA4 / A3 sheets

Sheets make sense when you are still finding out what sells. Rolls make sense once you know — the per-unit cost drops and you stop handling cut sheets.

One operational note that catches people out: this material does not like being left open. Unopened in its original packaging, the A film holds for around 9 months and the B film for 12 months, stored at 18–28 °C and 40–60 % relative humidity, away from UV light. Once you break the seal, use it through rather than leaving a partial roll on the rack for months.

Getting UV DTF Film Application Right the First Time

The two failure modes we get asked about most on hard substrates are bubbles and lifting.

For bubbles, the method matters more than the material. Use a squeegee technique: press from the centre of the graphic outward, slowly, working the air out to the edges as you go. Our film has good levelling properties, so a correct technique produces a bubble-free result — but no film compensates for a trapped-air corner.

For lifting, the preparation is the whole story. Clean the substrate with alcohol before applying, and make sure it is free of dust and oil. Adhesion is not instant and it is not linear: it builds over roughly 24 hours, and heat accelerates it — the adhesive reaches maximum strength around 90–95 °C. If a customer complains that a label "peeled off," the first thing to check is whether the surface was cleaned before application.

Both of these are process issues, and both are fixable. Neither one is a reason to change material.

About FCOLOR UV DTF Film

Fullcolor Technology Limited (FCOLOR) is a professional R&D company and manufacturer of DTF and UV printing solutions, based in Dongguan, China. We produce UV DTF crystal label film as an A film + B film system on virgin PET base material, along with DTF film, DTF pigment ink, hot-melt powder and the UV DTF, DTF, UV flatbed, UV roll, sublimation and DTG printer lines.

Crystal label film is stocked in 30 cm / 60 cm rolls and A4 / A3 sheets, with custom widths and lengths available. Minimum order starts at 1 roll; stock specifications ship within 48 hours and custom specifications take 3–5 days. Custom labels and carton design are available for buyers running their own brand.

Every production batch is tested for coating thickness, peeling performance and colour reproduction before it ships, and we hold to virgin PET base material rather than recycled stock so that film flatness, transparency and adhesion stay consistent batch to batch — once your parameters are set, they stay set.

If you are evaluating a substrate or a size that is not on our standard list, tell us what you are applying to and which printer you run. That is usually enough for us to tell you whether a stock size works or a custom specification makes more sense. Reach us at www.fcolor.com.cn.
