DTF Film FAQ: Types, Sizes, and Print-Side Best Practices

Does DTF Ink Clog Print Heads? An Honest Answer

The first question almost every new buyer asks is whether DTF ink blocks the print head. The honest answer from FCOLOR: our DTF ink is not a head-clogging formulation. We have sold large volumes over many years and the feedback we hear back from operators is consistently positive.

That said, ink chemistry is only half the story. White DTF ink contains titanium dioxide, and titanium dioxide settles when it sits still. Three habits eliminate most clogging complaints: do not overfill the white ink tank if your daily volume is low, run a print or ink circulation cycle at least every few weeks, and never let white ink stand completely static for more than three months. Past three months of zero movement, white ink crystallizes, and that is true of every brand on the market, not just ours. Treat these as operating rules and head clogs basically stop happening.

How Much DTF Ink and Powder Does a 33 cm × 100 m Roll Use

This question comes with a calculation problem. A 33 cm × 100 m roll is 33 square meters of film, but the actual ink and powder consumption depends on how much of that area the artwork covers. So instead of quoting a per-roll number that is half-guesswork, we measured a real production run and scaled it.

Test conditions: print coloration rate 70 percent, ten A4-sized images per batch covering 7.7 square meters of film. The measured consumption was 143 grams of CMYK DTF ink, 314.2 grams of white DTF ink, and 320 grams of hot-melt powder. Scaling that to one square meter gives 18.5 g of CMYK ink, 40.7 g of white ink, and 41.5 g of powder. For a full 33 square meter roll at the same coverage, multiply by 33 and you land in the neighborhood of 610 g of CMYK ink, 1.34 kg of white ink, and 1.37 kg of powder. Dense artwork will run higher, light artwork will run lower.

L1800 DTF Ink Volume and Heat Press Transfer Settings

On an L1800-class DTF printer converted from the Epson desktop platform, the starting point we ship to customers is white DTF ink at 90 to 100 percent and CMYK at 13 to 15 percent. These are not universal numbers. Different machine drivers interpret ink volume percentages differently, so treat 90 to 100 percent white and 13 to 15 percent color as a calibrated starting point, then fine-tune to match your specific printer head and RIP software.

For the heat press transfer, set 160-165 degrees Celsius for 10 to 15 seconds. If the printed design scrapes off after pressing, or the film will not peel cleanly, or the print cracks after one wash, the cause is almost always insufficient curing time in the oven or powder shaker, not the press. Fix curing first, transfer second.

Double-Side vs Single-Side DTF Film: What the Extra Coating Does

DTF film comes in two constructions. Single-side DTF film has one ink-receptive coating, applied to the print surface only. Double-side DTF film has two coatings, with an additional layer that improves how the film feeds through the printer and powder shaker.

In practice, double-side DTF film is easier to feed. It tracks straighter through the printer mechanism and is less likely to jam or skew, which matters on long production runs and on the wider 43 cm and 60 cm roll sizes. If your shop runs mostly A4 and A3 sheets and short runs, single-side film performs fine. For long rolls and continuous production, double-side film is the safer choice. The print quality is identical once the coating layer count is set. The coating difference is about machine handling, not image quality.

Glossy vs Matte DTF Film: Which Finish to Choose

Glossy DTF film and matte DTF film print identically. The visual difference shows up after transfer. A glossy film produces a brighter, more reflective final image with sharper color saturation. A matte film produces a softer, more muted finish that some apparel brands prefer for a vintage or premium feel.

If a buyer complains that their printed colors look dull, the very first question to ask is which film they loaded. Nine times out of ten, switching the same artwork and the same DTF ink from matte to glossy instantly brightens the transferred result without changing any printer settings. Film choice is the cheapest color knob in the entire workflow.

Standard DTF Film Sizes We Stock

The DTF film sizes we keep in regular production and stock cover both sheet-based desktop workflows and roll-based shop production. Sheets: A4, A3, and A3 plus. Rolls: 30 cm × 100 m, 33 cm × 100 m, 43 cm × 100 m, and 60 cm × 100 m. The 33 cm × 100 m and 43 cm × 100 m sizes are the most common for DTF print shops running i3200 or XP600 print heads. The 60 cm width is for high-volume shops running wide-format printers such as 60 cm-class DTF rigs.

For wholesale orders, custom roll widths are negotiable. For sheet orders, A4 and A3 ship from stock, and we can also die-cut sheets to custom sizes with a minimum order quantity. If a particular size is not on the list, ask. The standard sizes exist because they cover most printers, not because we cannot make others.

How to Identify the Print Side of DTF Film

Putting ink on the wrong side of DTF film is the single most common cause of poor transfer results. It is also the easiest to prevent. The print side of DTF film has the ink-receptive coating; the back side has a slippery, non-absorbent finish. Two simple checks work.

For roll film, the print side is the outer surface of the roll as it unwinds. Pull a few inches off the roll and look at the curvature. The side facing outward, with the slight curl away from you, is the print side. For sheet film, the print side is marked. There is a small indicator on the corner or edge of every sheet so operators never have to guess.

If you want a third sanity check, drop a tiny bit of water on each side. The print side will absorb the water and turn slightly darker as the coating soaks it in. The back side will bead up and roll off. This trick works on every film we have ever tested and resolves the print-side question in under five seconds.

One related quality note. Some customers occasionally receive a roll showing a crease along the edge. FCOLOR DTF film is made on large-format coating machines with manual inspection, so this defect is rare. When it does happen, it is almost always an isolated incident from a machine transition, not a systemic batch issue. We test every shipment before it leaves the factory, and we are tightening inspection to push the crease rate even lower. If you do receive a creased roll, contact our support team for a replacement.
