However, organic solvents in solvent-based inks can cause environmental pollution. Therefore, environmental-friendly solvent-based inks have become one of the development directions of solvent-based inks. In recent years, weak solvent inks have developed rapidly as a new type of inkjet ink, and have attracted more and more attention. ECO-solvent Ink is also known as environmentally friendly solvent ink. ECO can be regarded as an abbreviation for environmentally friendly, uncoated substrates and outdoor weathering resistance. The characteristics of weak solvent inks are generally environmental protection, high precision and outdoor weathering resistance.

Compared with ordinary solvent-based inks such as Mimaki Solvent Ink, the weakest solvent inks are most environmentally friendly, mainly reflected in the reduction of volatile VOCs and no longer using many toxic and harmful organic solvents (such as benzene, Toxic solvents such as ketones, toluene, xylene and cyclohexanone), so no ventilation is needed in the production workshop of the weak solvent inkjet printer. Compared with water-based inks, weak solvent inks not only maintain the advantages of high-precision screens made by water-based inks, but also overcome the disadvantages that water-based inks are harsh on the substrate and the screens cannot be applied outdoors. Therefore, weak solvent inks are between water-based and solvent-based inks, taking into account the advantages of both. However, we must see that the main component of the weak solvent ink is still organic solvents, that is, the weak solvent ink is a classification of the solvent-based ink, and it is an environmentally friendly version.

In the production process of inks, in addition to the selection of environmentally friendly solvents, weak solvent inks also have two higher requirements compared to solvent-based inks. One is that in order to achieve high-precision output, the dot dispersion of the ink must be better controlled. The other is that the filtration precision of the ink production process is higher. At present, there are two main types of printers using weak solvent inks: one is inkjet printing products using Epson printheads, the main manufacturers are Mimaki, and the other is inkjet printing products using Konica Minolta printheads.

The world-renowned ITStrategies company conducted a survey of 149 image production companies and found that 75% of customers have already purchased or are preparing to purchase weak solvent inkjet printers, and only 25% of customers do not intend to purchase. The market demand for ink printers is very large. In fact, due to its beautiful colors, rich abrasion resistance and easy discoloration, weak solvent inks are now widely used in universal printers and photo machine industries.

Solvent-based inks have achieved considerable development, and the use of colorants, solvents, and auxiliary formulations has made the inks have made great progress in water resistance, light resistance, sun fastness, and image sharpness. However, due to the inherent weakness of traditional solvent-based inks, it is difficult to make a big breakthrough in the future inkjet ink market, and the demand for environmentally-friendly weak-solvent inks has gradually increased.
